The Most Common Flange Types
The use of different types of flanges for different purposes is vital.
Standard types of flanges: these flanges
are used for piping applications, which mainly depend on the required strength
for the flanged joint. These types of flanges are basically used for welding
connections, and to facilitate maintenance operations.
a)
Blind flanges: Unlike all the types of flanges mentioned
above, this flange type does not have a center hole. Stainless
Steel Blind Flanges are mostly used to seal the end or opening of a pipe. These
are used to blind or seal a pipeline, a valve/pressure vessel and block
the flow of the fluid. Blind flanges allow easy access to the pipelines,
because they can be easily unbolted to let the operator execute
activities inside the terminal end of the pipe.
b)
Slip on
flanges: This type of a flange is connected to the pipe or
fittings by two fillet welds, from which one is executed outside and one is
executed inside the flange. These are easy to recognize because of their slim
and compact shape.
c)
Threaded
flanges: These flanges are joined to pipes by
screwing the pipe onto the flange, without seam welds. They are mostly used in
small size piping in low pressure and low temperature, for example water and
air utility services.
d)
Socket weld
flanges: These are connected to pipes using a
single fillet weld executed on the outer side of the flange. These are used for
small size and high pressure piping that do not transfer highly corrosive
fluids.
e)
Lap joint
flanges: With a flat face, these flanges are used in
conjunction with a stub end. The use of these flanges along with stub ends is a
cost effective solution for stainless steel and nickel alloy pipelines.
